Becoming an Outdoor-Women Winter Skills Weekend @ University of Maine 4-H Camp & Learning Center at Bryant Pond
Feb 23 – Feb 25 all-day

Learn or improve your skills in topics such as ice fishing, outdoor survival, cooking wild game, fly tying, snowshoeing, wildlife tracking, shelter building, shotgun, archery and more! All in a safe and comfortable environment with knowledgeable and dedicated instructors.

Session I

Archery: Hit the bullseye with this workshop and learn how to shoot safely and accurately! Our certified 4-H instructors will get you on target quickly and by the end of this session you’ll become a proficient archer, and possibly a better bow hunter! We’ll cover equipment, shooting form, and how to choose your first bow.

Ice Fishing: Learn the basics of ice fishing. Learn how to use a power auger, set traps and use different types of fishing equipment, and most importantly how to hook and catch a fish! You’ll also learn fish I.D. and bait selection. There will be plenty of time to try different equipment and learn specific tactics on catching fish. This year, we’ll actually be cooking lunch right there on the ice, because let’s face it, eating is the best part of fishing on the ice! (Heated ice shacks provided.)

To get your Maine Fishing license: https://moses.informe.org/cgi-bin/online/moses_v3/index

Wild Game Cooking (Indoors): The desire to harvest, cook, and eat wild game is growing rapidly! Step into the camp kitchen where you’ll turn wild game into an amazing meal! Learn cooking and seasoning techniques, and prepare food that will be served later for all to try! Big game as well as waterfowl and other game meats will be the focus.

Intro Snowmobiling: Learn the basics of snowmobile travel and soon you’ll be riding on our course designed to challenge new riders. The workshop will include proper layering and outerwear for long trips on a snow machine. Our instructors will cover snowmobile safety, emergency preparedness, and basic operation…along with plenty of time to ride on various terrain.

Wildlife Tracking: There’s nothing better than hitting the powder on snowshoes in the Maine woods in February! But once you’ve begun your journey, you soon realize that other living creatures have already been there…What crossed my path? Who was here before me? Learn tracking and wildlife identification along the way, and see some amazing forest features too. Bring the camera, because you may just catch a glimpse of just who left those tracks ahead!

Fly Tying: Spring is just around the corner…and that means fly fishing! Let us show you how to tie a fly that is guaranteed to catch fish! You’ll have a chance to tie several flies of your own, and learn a bit about fishing for Brook Trout and salmon as well.
Session II

Shotgun Sporting Clays: Breaking clays over fresh snow is a great way to spend the day! We’ll work on safe gun handling and basic shotgunning and then we’ll take it to the sporting clays range for some highflying clay target shooting! Learn proper stance, follow through, and point and shoot techniques from certified instructors, and have a chance to shoot different types of 12 and 20 gauge shotguns. Ear and eye protection is supplied.

Intro Snowmobiling: Learn the basics of snowmobile travel. This will include proper layering and outerwear for long trips on a snow machine. Our instructors will also cover snowmobile safety, emergency preparedness, and basic operation…along with plenty of time to ride on various terrain.

Deer Hunting Intensive: This workshop takes the new deer hunter to the next level! Maybe you’re new to hunting, or simply want to learn how to be more successful in the Maine woods. The focus will be on judging distance, shot placement in realistic scenarios, and shooting from a ground blind and tree stand. This will be a live fire workshop that will emphasize making ethical shots and how to blood trail and recovery game. Also covered will be scent control, use of calls and lures, as well as other tactics. This workshop will be taught by a Master Maine Guide that specializes in hunting.

Fly Tying: Spring is just around the corner…and that means fly fishing! Let us show you how to tie a fly that is guaranteed to catch fish! You’ll have a chance to tie several flies of your own, and learn a bit about fishing for Brook Trout and salmon as well.

Winter Survival-Staying Found: Exploring the outdoors can be exciting, but staying “found” is critical, especially when poor weather or an emergency arises. This workshop will cover basic navigation with map and compass and trip planning, and then blend current technology such as GPS, and other modern tracking devices that are helpful in staying safe and on track. Several great aps will be discussed as well as using iNReach or SPOT devices in the backcountry. Time will be spend indoors and out as we explore the benefits of proper planning and preparation.

Trapping In Maine: Maine has a long history of various methods of sustainably harvesting legal wildlife. Trapping is one of those management tools. In this workshop you will learn the basics of wildlife management practices, furbearer identification, and basic trapping sets and techniques. You will have a chance to practice with a pole, dirt, and water set, and learn how to lure various species while preventing non-target species to your site. This workshop is by a member of Maine Department of Inland and Fisheries.
Session III

Winter Camping 101: If Winter Camping sounds scary to you, let us change your mind! Our seasoned staff will teach you the basics of overnighting in the winter. Learn how to apply your summer camping skills and prepare yourself with shelter building, proper layering and even how to choose/plan the right menu. Once you understand how to prepare, the winter becomes an amazing time to camp…think of all the empty campgrounds and less frequented trails just for you!

Shotgun Advanced: The demand for the next step in shotgun shooting is the inspiration for this workshop! We’ll cover various chokes and patterning, shooting multiple targets, and various shooting positions. We’ll include wing shooting, waterfowl, and turkey shooting with respect to shot placement and shotshell selection as well as shooting various types of shotguns to get a better idea on what works best for you and the type of shooting you plan on doing.

Wild Game Preparation: Cabela’s Focus on cutting/grinding/ sausage/jerky, etc.: With the increase in folks hunting for their own wild game meat, the demand for knowing how to process at home has grown in popularity. Rather than sending that whitetail to the butcher, try to process your own at home! With support from Cabela’s you’ll learn basic butchering skills and what to do with your bounty of wild game meat. We’ll grind fresh burger, make sausage and wild jerky, as well as other cuts, as well as showing how to preserve your game meat for storage.

Fly Tying: Spring is just around the corner…and that means fly fishing! Let us show you how to tie a fly that is guaranteed to catch fish! You’ll have a chance to tie several flies of your own, and learn a bit about fishing for Brook Trout and salmon as well.

Snowshoe Trek to Mt. Christopher: Enjoy the crisp beauty of hiking in the winter woods. We will strap on snowshoes and go over some techniques for making your snowshoe hike a successful one! As you hike up Mt. Christopher your guide will add in plenty of ecology tidbits and fun facts to enjoy.
Session IV

Wildlife Tracking/Snowshoeing: There’s nothing better than hitting the powder on snowshoes in the Maine woods in February!

Fire Cooking: Have you ever tried getting that smoky fire-cooked taste, only to wind up with a charred mess? In this class we will teach you the art of fire cooking. We will introduce cooking directly in the coals with foil, dutch ovens and cast iron skillets. This primitive backcountry skill isn’t quite as hard as it may seem; with the right direction from our experienced teachers you will be baking up some tasty cobbler or stew in no time!

Turkey Hunting: As the snows melt and spring arrives, so does Turkey season! Hunting this wary bird takes patience, skill, and know-how. Learn how to dress, set up or construct a ground blind, set decoys, and practice the art of bringing them in with various calls. Participants will leave with all of the basics to get started in this growing sport, and each will take home their own turkey call!

Reaching New Heights: Climbing Wall/Rock Climbing Intro: Whether it’s your first time at an indoor rock-climbing wall or you’re an old pro, let our trained staff belay you up our 35’ wall! We’ll cover gear, safety basics, and different techniques to give you the best advantage at tackling this vertical challenge. All the equipment is provided. However, if you have climbing shoes feel free to bring them, all other equipment used must be ours.

Fly Tying: Spring is just around the corner…and that means fly fishing! Let us show you how to tie a fly that is guaranteed to catch fish! You’ll have a chance to tie several flies of your own, and learn a bit about fishing for Brook Trout and salmon as well.

Handgun Safety – Concealed Carry: Whether you are looking to start shooting recreationally, or carrying concealed, this new workshop will start you in the right direction. Covering an array of action types, professional firearms instructors from Howell’s Gun Shop will teach you how to shoot safely and what you need to know about carrying a handgun.

Downdogs at Dirigo @ Dirigo Brewing Co
Feb 25 @ 10:30 am
Downdogs at Dirigo @ Dirigo Brewing Co | Biddeford | Maine | United States

Sundays are for chilling out. Down time. Going easy.

I’m all for lounging around in pajamas the entire day watching old episodes of Dateline. But for an easy-going Sunday that you can still feel proud to talk about at work on Monday, there’s Downdogs at Dirigo.

This weekly event combines an hour of yoga with a glass of your favorite Dirigo Brewing Co. beer. (To be clear, you do the yoga first, then drink the beer. Not that beer-during-yoga wouldn’t also be lovely, but think of it most as a post-yoga reward.)

Sundays 10:30 a.m.at Dirigo Brewing Co., 28 Pearl St, Biddeford
(The tasting room opens to the public at noon).
$15 drop-in. Bring your own mat.
