This is the course to take if you are new to sea kayaking. You’ll learn all the basics of the sport and leave with the skills and knowledge needed to kayak on protected seas with other paddlers. Your instructor will get your group started onshore with a brief talk about boats and gear. Then you’ll get fitted into kayaks and head onto Casco Bay to learn the essential strokes of the sport. You’ll take a brief paddle in Portland harbor and practice strategies for safe paddling in open waters. Kayak Rescue Clinic @ Portland Paddle | Portland | Maine | United States

Getting back into a kayak after a capsize is more difficult than you might expect — but only if you’re not prepared. That why it’s important to be familiar with some techniques that enable you to rescue yourself and fellow paddlers if someone accidentally goes for a swim. This course, open to anyone who has sea kayaked at least once before, will give you a chance to learn and practice some of the most tried and true kayak rescues. Portland Paddle (and most sea kayaking outfitters in the U.S. and Canada) will require you to have the skills taught in this course before letting you rent a sea kayak for use on open coastal waters. As with all our courses, your instructor will customize the course to meet with each student’s goals and interests. Wetsuits and all necessary gear are provided. Plan to get wet!

First Friday Beauty Paddle @ Yarmouth boat launch | Yarmouth | Maine | United States

Our Summer Beauty Paddles help to create and hold space for collective deep breaths in natural environments. We will meet monthly on Fridays over the summer to paddle, reflect, converse, and then return to our important work in the world. The paddles are about 2 hours in length and are a space for the justice-minded to gather and be together on the water.

These gatherings are at no cost to the community, but Renewal will not provide group canoes or kayaks (for now). Please either bring your own canoe or kayak or rent canoes at low cost.

Canoe rentals are available from Yarmouth Community Services (http://www.yarmouthcommunityservices.org/rentals) for $10. Please rent your canoe prior to our meet-up. We will meet at the boat launch behind the Yarmouth Historical Society, across from the Royal River Park. Bring your water bottle and a lunch or a snack.

Women’s Lake Paddling Adventure @ Richardson Lake
Jul 9 – Jul 12 all-day
Women's Lake Paddling Adventure @ Richardson Lake | Rangeley | Maine | United States

The Rangeley Lakes Region is one of my favorite locations in Maine. If you like lakes, 4000’ mountains and quaint villages then this trip is for you! We will be travelling by tandem and single kayak from island to island stopping at sand beaches along the way for swimming and lunch. Nights will be spent camping in either island or main land sites on the preserve. The night sky is amazing. Be prepared to be dazzled by the intensity and brightness of the stars. Most of the land surrounding these lakes is either owned by the Stephen Phillips Preserve or South Arm Campground. It is wild, remote and extremely beautiful! No paddling experience is necessary.
