Midcoast Conservancy is holding the third annual Maine Summer Adventure Race on June 16, 2018. As in years past, the race will be based out of the Midcoast Conservancy’s Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson, Maine. In 2018, interested racers will have three options to choose from: a 24-hour race, which will be a USARA National Championship Qualifier, an 8-hour intermediate race or a 3-hour race for beginners and families.
Adventure racing involves teams of two, three or four competing in a nonstop race that includes trail running or trekking, road and mountain biking, sea kayaking and orienteering. Teams will have to combine athleticism with strategy and navigation to guide themselves to as many checkpoints as possible within the race’s time limit.
The precise course will not be revealed until the morning of the race, but as in past years, the 2018 race will visit scenic and remote areas of Midcoast Maine. In the 24 hour race, participants can expect 10 to 20 miles of challenging, off-trail orienteering, 30 to 50 miles of biking including technical mountain biking, and 15 to 25 miles of tidal sea kayaking. The 2017 USARA national champions, Pennsylvania-based Rootstock Racing, have already committed to the race.
For those looking for a more manageable challenge, the 8-hour course will be structured so that all teams will be able to experience the full, base course, with advanced racers challenged by additional checkpoints. Racers can expect approximately 3 to 8 miles on foot, 15 to 25 miles on bikes, and 4 to 8 miles of paddling.
The 3-hour race is designed for beginner racers and for those looking to get the entire family outside for a day in the woods. The 3-hour race will combine hiking, canoeing and Amazing Race-style challenges and is designed to be possible to complete and enjoyable for participants of all ages and abilities. Racers can do as much or as little of the course as they choose and special prizes will be given for the top family team.
Registration fees for all races include race t-shirt, swag bag, maps, boats, paddles, PFDs, prizes and giveaways, facility and land-use fees, and a post-race feast, including local fare, vegetarian and gluten-free options and a featured local microbrew from Oxbow Brewing, one of our sponsors.
3-Hour Family Race – Under 18 – $20.00
3-Hour Family Race – Adult – $40.00
8-Hour Race – $115.00
24-Hour Race – $200.00

oin us this summer for our first Camping Retreat in beautiful, picturesque Acadia National Park! This weekend retreat will consist of 3 nights/4 days of camping, hiking, paddleboarding, yoga and the ultimate connection with nature.
Acadia National Park, located on Mount Desert Island, is a stunning national treasure on the coast of Maine. No matter where you explore in this park, the views are spectacular and nature abounds. No wonder this is one of the most visited parks in all of North America!
Acadia National Park offers hiking, biking, camping, breathtaking views of jagged coastlines, and pristine lakes for the nature lover, adventurer and outdoor enthusiast. More than two dozen mountains rise above the rocky shore, including Cadillac Mountain, which at 1,530 feet is the highest point on the U.S. Atlantic coast. There are more than 130 miles of hiking trails to explore by foot and 45 miles of carriage roads to travel by bike. Also, side note: Acadia is one of the best places on the east coast to view the Milky Way and you will LOVE star gazing by the fireside at night
We will be staying at the KOA Oceanside Campground located in Bar Harbor, situated at the head of Mount Desert Island, just 7 miles from the entrance of Acadia National Park. We offer two options for camping accommodations; Comfort shared Cabins or Oceanview Tent sites.
Comfort shared Cabins: These cabins make a great base camp and will provide you with many of the comforts of home and allow you to fully experience Acadia. Tucked back in the Maine woods but still close to the shoreline, you can walk right out your front door and enjoy the sunset. Cabins are equipped with bedding and all linens, a full bathroom with shower, microwave, refrigerator, sink, keurig coffee maker, outdoor grill, air conditioning, WiFi, fire pit, and a TV.
Ocean View Tent sites: A room with a view! All our tent sites offer an Ocean View. Pitch your 2 person tent near the ocean and watch the sky melt into sunset pastels while you warm by the campfire. Enjoy easy access to the sea for swimming and paddleboarding. Bathhouses, laundry, and hot showers are nearby in walking distance. Leashed pets welcome at your campsite.
