Every ninja has to start somewhere.

You don’t just wake up one day with the agility of a jungle cat or an acrobat’s skill or the stealth to approach your enemy unnoticed. You have to learn that stuff.

And while most of us won’t ever be ninjas by profession (sought after for our skills in both sabotage and assassination), we can learn a few new tricks – and get in a solid workout in the process.

Maine Warrior Gym in Westbrook has hosted classes in this vein for the last two years. The gym’s opening coincided with the rising popularity of American Ninja Warrior, and classes and workshops train students on many of the obstacles featured on the show (salmon ladder, warped wall, monkey bars, rope climb, quad steps).

Now they’ve added a new class for men and women who really want to bring out their inner ninja: Beginner Ninja Fitness. The eight-week session starts Aug. 22.

Tim Johnson, co-owner of Maine Warrior Gym, will teach the class, which is offered on Tuesday evenings or Friday late-mornings. The class is geared toward adults who are new to obstacle Fitness, he says. “There’s currently a good variety of athleticism in the class, and I work hard to ensure that everyone has the tools to overcome the obstacle at hand at their own skill level but I also give you the opportunity to push yourself outside your comfort zone and excel at your own pace.”

The class will help students improve agility, speed and strength, but Tim says he also leverages those intimidating obstacles so there’s a balance of fun and different while also helping people overcome their fears and increase their confidence, both physical and mental. It’s the sort of confidence-building that translates outside the gym, too.

Beginner Ninja Fitness is open to anyone 18 and older. Classes start on Tuesday, Aug. 22 at 6:30 p.m. and Friday, Aug. 25 at 11 a.m. and run for eight weeks. And students will be all over the 5,000-square-foot obstacle course space, which has everything from small balance beams to a 14.5-foot warped wall.

Sure beats running a treadmill, amiright?

Also worth noting: Maine Warrior Gym has a host of other classes for adults, like Upper Body Strength Training, Intro to Obstacle Fitness, Parkour, Tae Kwon Do, Ninjitsu, and personal training. Also, totally check out The Axe Pit.

And who knows, you might find you’re one day fielding calls from folks looking for a reputable ninja.
