Bad Little Trail Run @ Downeast Coastal Conservancy
Oct 1 @ 10:00 am – 1:00 pm
Bad Little Trail Run @ Downeast Coastal Conservancy | Machias | Maine | United States

Join Downeast Coastal Conservancy and the Sunrise Athletic Club for a trail running event along the Machias River Preserve to celebrate conservation in our community and help raise awareness for the protection of Downeast Maine’s wild places!

This inaugural event offers 2 race distances (6 mile & 2.5 mile loops). Both races start and end in Whitneyville, followed by post-race food, celebration and awards ceremony at the historic Whitneyville Hillgrove Communty Hall.

It’s not really that “Bad”
Translated in Passamaquoddy, the word Machias means “bad little falls”, a reference to the raging Machias River!

Wind through the woods and race the river!
The 2.5 and 6 mile trail race courses both begin in Whitneyville on the Sunrise Trail and cross the Machias River on the old railroad bridge. The two courses are mostly single track trail with stretches along the river, under giant hemlocks, through grassy swales, over rocks and roots, bog bridges, some possible wet holes and across a beaver dam. The 6 mile course includes the Machias River Heritage Trail and a section of the multiuse Sunrise Trail.

Wesley's Jingle Dash for Cancer @ Hybrid Fitness | Thomaston | Maine | United States

The first Annual Wesley’s Jingle Dash was created to help financially support Wesley Grindle in his battle against cancer, and to also raise awareness around this terrible disease. Each year as our walk sustains annual growth, it will support other long-time community members that need a helping hand through a life altering transition. The event begins with the “dash”, a brisk and crisp winter walk around Thomaston, and finishes with the “jingle” at Indigo Café. The “jingle” will feature local acoustic musicians accompanied by home style crockpot dishes and soup. You can enjoy all of this with the local Thomaston community.

Spring time paddle on Chandler Brook @ Chandler Brook
Apr 13 @ 10:30 am
Spring time paddle on Chandler Brook @ Chandler Brook

We will be offering two paddling trips, starting at the same time and same place. We’ll plan on Saturday April 13 at 10:30 am, with a rain date of Sunday April 14, 2019 at 10:30 am.

The first trip: Round Trip on Chandler Brook in Pownal and Durham. This is one of our “family friendly paddles.” For details on the paddling & directions visit: Family Friendly Paddles. Trip leader: Fred Fauver, phone (207) 688-6255. Round trip: 4.6 miles.

Meet in North Pownal where the Poland Range Road crosses Chandler Brook at 10:30 am. No car shuttle required. Bring your own boats, gear, PFDs, water, and lunch. Depending on water levels, there may be a need to cross a beaver dam or two as we approach Runaround, but if the going gets too tough there’s the easy option of turning around. We’ll post updates on this events page as we approach the date, as we know water levels and conditions.

The second trip will be downstream from Poland Range Road (North Pownal) to Elmwood Road (Pownal Center), requiring a car shuttle. We’ll have a few cars at Elmwood in advance (to shuttle drivers after the trip), or you can shuttle yourself early or leave your own car at Elmwood Road (Chandler Brook crossing) prior to the 10:30 am meet-up at Pownal Range Road, to help your own schedule. This three mile section can only be paddled during spring high water or after heavy rain. There are rapids and ledge falls and portages (around strainers) and likely you will get muddy and wet. At high water, this is a short fast trip. Two trips is a possibility, or we might paddle upriver to meet the first group after our downstream trip. Visit the Water Trail for more details: Royal River Water Trail Chandler Brook Paddling Routes. Trip leader: Alan Stearns, cell (207) 215-8315.

We’ll post updates on this events page as the event approaches, as water levels become more clear, and once we assess strainers. Check back here.

For this second trip, meet in the same location as above for the first trip, at the same time. Bring your own boats, gear, PFDs, safety equipment, water, and lunch. We recommend helmets, throwbags, and whistles.

If you are up for an whitewater adventure, join the downstream paddle. If you are looking for an easy-going adventure, remote-feeling, pristine paddle, choose the upstream paddle.
