In between roasting s’mores and making sure kids get from their bunkbeds to activities and meals safely, you’ll take in gorgeous Maine scenery, eat 3+ meals a day cooked by the facility, and meet incredible humans from all walks of life. And at the end of the week, you’ll return home with tan cheeks, an overflowing heart, and the knowledge you provided an irreplaceable service to campers, as for some of them this is the only week of the summer they see their brother or sister during the year.

Got goosebumps? Apply now! No experience with the foster care system is necessary – training on some basic background is provided during orientation, and after you apply Camp To Belong Maine will contact you to learn more about you, and give you the opportunity to ask questions!

Want to chat with a counselor alum before starting the application process? Fit Maine Social Club member Stefanie Millette is a veteran Camp to Belong volunteer and can share her perspective at stefanie.millette@gmail.com

Vinyasa Yoga w/ Amy @ Threads of Yoga
Aug 17 @ 8:30 am
Vinyasa Yoga w/ Amy @ Threads of Yoga | Bridgton | Maine | United States

The room is heated up to 80 degrees. During summer months, the heat is not on. We work a nature’s heat. This class is great for a good sweat!

Each class is unique and each class targets a peak pose through intelligent sequencing. The class is led with intention as you are properly prepared for the apex of the practice. We work with foundational and primary poses in each practice.

The practice session allows the body to open slowly, not to overload the nervous system, and in exchange, tension, stress, and congestion that has been stored in the muscles and joints now has the opportunity to release. We also work to create strength in the body as we begin to embrace longer holds and include movement. In leaving a class one should have a feeling of stability, strength and a connection to the body.

This class is a dynamic practice. No yoga experience is necessary, as modifications are offered.

Please hydrate properly before the class.

Gentle Yoga w/ Amy @ Threads of Yoga
Aug 17 @ 10:00 am
Gentle Yoga w/ Amy @ Threads of Yoga | Bridgton | Maine | United States

In this class we slow things down. We begin each practice with slow stretching of the body and preparing the body for movement in the form of Vinyasa. We make our transition into fluid movement at a slower pace, then winding down and easing into restorative. Practicing poses from this easeful state will help develop balance, strength, and resiliency and create a nourishing and rejuvenating experience of yoga.

Bring your mat and some water and get ready to enjoy a sweet outdoor class! Please note: Herd dynamics change throughout the season, so some weeks classes are next to the goats with baby snuggling after class, other weeks we will practice with goats in and amongst the mats! Refine your Sun Salutation @ The Daily Sweat
Aug 18 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm
Refine your Sun Salutation @ The Daily Sweat

Sun salutations are a sequence of poses linked together by the breath. They work to strengthen the body and focus the mind, and form the foundation for the entire practice. Because we are constantly moving and rarely holding the individual poses, it is easy to lose our alignment. If we develop unconscious habits that are repeated over and over, this can lead to injury.

In this workshop we will first focus on the breath. Long, even breaths steady the nervous system, strengthens the body, and builds internal heat. When you are concerned with the breath within one posture, or one movement, your mind is in the present moment, which is where yoga wants us to be. After focusing on the breath we will work on refining our alignment in each of the postures in Sun Salutation A & B. We will take a deeper look at what is happening in chaturanga, upward facing dog, and downward facing dog, and explore different modifications and enhancements so that all levels will benefit—from beginner to advanced.

Aug 19 @ 6:00 am – 6:45 am
Biddeford Saco Boot Camp on the beach @ Fortunes Rocks Beach, Middles Beach, Bath House Beach, in Biddeford Pool | Biddeford | Maine | United States

Boot camp uses interval, circuit, and aerobic training. It will burn fat, tone muscle, improve posture, build strength and endurance, and build confidence. You work out your arms, legs, and core using exercises that incorporate your whole body. Boot camp can get you into the best shape of your life. As one of my campers stated, “I am stronger, faster, and leaner”
A typical day includes a warm up, stretches, the ‘workout’, cool down, a possible game or challenge, and finishing stretches.

Boot camps varying routines are intense sessions that offer a variety of exercises, and challenge every muscle in your body. By rapidly moving from one exercise to the next, with minimal breaks, you can get a cardiovascular workout while simultaneously toning your muscles. And, you burn lots of calories. Its fun, varied, motivating, produces amazing results, and meets at a fantastic location.

Boot camp’s 45 minutes workouts allow you to do strength training and aerobic training in a single workout, which is very efficient when you have a limited time to work out.

Special Surfer Night is an evening where special needs kids get to bulldoze their way into the mainstream world of surfing where they feel powerful and focused. Volunteers can stay dry, or be in the water. Experienced surfers are always great, but many volunteers just help out as surfer’s assistants in the water. It’s incredible! Beginner’s Yoga @ Threads of Yoga

Beginner's Yoga @ Threads of Yoga | Bridgton | Maine | United States

The beginner class focuses on the fundamental principles of alignment and a sequence of postures linked together by the breath. Students will be introduced to yoga poses through step by step verbal description and demonstration. Emphasis is placed on student understanding, safety, and stability within each pose. Props and posture modifications are offered to accommodate new or tighter bodies. No yoga experience is necessary. Class is open to all ages.

About your Instructor: Laurie Chadbourne believes that we all come to yoga with different needs and goals and sometimes we may not even know why we are arriving upon the mat. Yoga calls us in and guides us. Her intention is to create a safe, supportive practice that is accessible for everyone, at every age and every stage of life. She aspires to lead you through compassionate, judgment free, lighthearted classes linking breath and movement as she embarks on the journey of teaching. Robert A. Heinlein inspires her with, “When one teaches, two learn.”

Laurie enjoys reading and playing the guitar. She truly believes laughter may be the best medicine (next to yoga) and brings plenty of that with her on and off the mat.

Weekly Group SUP Paddle @ Portland Paddle

We’re bringing back our weekly SUP paddles for our 2019 season! Starting on June 6 our staff will lead an early morning paddle from our site at the East End Beach every Thursday. It’s free to join with your own board or just $15 to rent one from us ($10 off the usual rate).

This weekly gathering is a casual paddle open to anyone with some SUP experience who feels comfortable and confident on a board. This isn’t a guided trip, so everyone is responsible for their own safety and it’s not a good fit for total novices. That said, our staff are happy to share their knowledge of the sport and offer tips and support. The group will stay on the water for about an hour and will pick a destination that fits the conditions and participants.

A note about weather: If we need to cancel a weekly paddle due to weather conditions we will post an update on our Meetup page and on Facebook.

Ashtanga Vinyasa Yoga @ Threads of Yoga | Bridgton | Maine | United States

The room is heated up to 80 degrees.

Each class is unique and targets a peak pose. The class is led with intention and intelligent sequencing to prepare the body properly for apex of the practice. We work foundational and primary poses in each session. And the root of the teachings is to develop the capacity for self-inquiry. The body becomes the vehicle. The practice session allows the body to open slowly not to overload the nervous system, and in exchange tension, stress and congestion that has been stored in the muscles and joints now has the opportunity to release. Thus creating ease. As we create strength in the body we also begin to embrace stillness and longer holds. In leaving a class one should have a feeling of stability, strength and a connection to the body.

This class is a dynamic practice. Please hydrate properly before the class.

About your instructor: The landscape of Amy Figoli’s teaching is to hold the intention for people to find a way in, to meet the totality of oneself through asana practice, as well as working with the ability to begin to listen to what is arising. Learning to not override the currently pushing language of culture and of our bodies. To hold the space for silence, and listen inquisitively to how the body speaks.

Aug 23 @ 6:00 am – 6:45 am

Beginners Yoga w/ Marcia @ Threads of Yoga
Aug 23 @ 8:30 am
Beginners Yoga w/ Marcia @ Threads of Yoga | Bridgton | Maine | United States

We begin with gentle movements to warm the body. This part of the practice includes gliding and circular motions to release tension from areas of congestion and restriction in the body. You are introduced to slower movements of the body in preparation for more movement in the form of Vinyasa. We transition into standing postures to begin to cultivate stability and strength. Props are utilized in the practice as support. The combination of these gentle movements and postures leads to the cultivation of a strong, flexible body.
No yoga experience is necessary

Vinyasa Yoga w/ Amy @ Threads of Yoga
Aug 24 @ 8:30 am

Aug 24 @ 10:00 am
Gentle Yoga w/ Amy @ Threads of Yoga | Bridgton | Maine | United States

In this class we slow things down. We begin each practice with slow stretching of the body and preparing the body for movement in the form of Vinyasa. We make our transition into fluid movement at a slower pace, then winding down and easing into restorative. Practicing poses from this easeful state will help develop balance, strength, and resiliency and create a nourishing and rejuvenating experience of yoga.
