The beginner class focuses on the fundamental principles of alignment and a sequence of postures linked together by the breath. Students will be introduced to yoga poses through step by step verbal description and demonstration. Emphasis is placed on student understanding, safety, and stability within each pose. Props and posture modifications are offered to accommodate new or tighter bodies. No yoga experience is necessary. Class is open to all ages.

About your Instructor: Laurie Chadbourne believes that we all come to yoga with different needs and goals and sometimes we may not even know why we are arriving upon the mat. Yoga calls us in and guides us. Her intention is to create a safe, supportive practice that is accessible for everyone, at every age and every stage of life. She aspires to lead you through compassionate, judgment free, lighthearted classes linking breath and movement as she embarks on the journey of teaching. Robert A. Heinlein inspires her with, “When one teaches, two learn.”

What concerns many novice backpackers or hikers even more than bears and blisters is, “How do I go to the bathroom in the woods?” Rest assured, it’s something humans have been doing for a long time. At this Skowhegan AmeriCorps Outdoor Recreation Program (SAORP) clinic, you’ll learn about going to the bathroom in the woods, backcountry hygiene challenges, and outdoor ethics. Our SAORP coaches will talk about women-specific topics, minimizing waste, and their favorite outdoor hygiene products. This clinic targets anyone and everyone – from the novice campers to the thru-hikers.

We begin with gentle movements to warm the body. This part of the practice includes gliding and circular motions to release tension from areas of congestion and restriction in the body. You are introduced to slower movements of the body in preparation for more movement in the form of Vinyasa. We transition into standing postures to begin to cultivate stability and strength. Props are utilized in the practice as support. The combination of these gentle movements and postures leads to the cultivation of a strong, flexible body.

Come spend the afternoon learning how to cross-country ski! In Part 1 of this two-part series, our Skowhegan AmeriCorps Outdoor Recreation Program (SAORP) coaches will show you how to use the gear and the basics of falling, stopping, ascending, and turning. Don’t expect a boring lecture or intimidating skill tests. We’ll play lots of games and hold group activities! After our skill-building session, we’ll go out on the trail to practice our new-found skills and discover a great way to get outside in the winter! Conclude the evening by defrosting at the warming hut.

Bring your cross-country skis, plenty of water, and snacks as this is a deceitfully tiresome activity! Meet at the warming hut just across the street from the Lakewood Clubhouse.

Come spend your Wednesday afternoons with Margi, a volunteer for the Jim Browne Foundation, and discover a great way to stay active during the winter! You’ll encounter thrilling hills, quick turns, and bridge crossings as you glide through the beautiful trails of Lakewood Golf Course. If you’re new to cross-country skiing, Margi can show you the basics: how to use your gear, starting, stopping, turning, falling, and gliding. Afterward, defrost in the spacious warming hut at the trailhead.

About your Instructor: Laurie Chadbourne believes that we all come to yoga with different needs and goals and sometimes we may not even know why we are arriving upon the mat. Yoga calls us in and guides us. Her intention is to create a safe, supportive practice that is accessible for everyone, at every age and every stage of life. She aspires to lead you through compassionate, judgment free, lighthearted classes linking breath and movement as she embarks on the journey of teaching. Robert A. Heinlein inspires her with, “When one teaches, two learn.”

Laurie enjoys reading and playing the guitar. She truly believes laughter may be the best medicine (next to yoga) and brings plenty of that with her on and off the mat.
