Time: Thu, Dec 20, 4:30 pm – 6:30 pm
Location: Hidden Valley Nature Center
Midcoast Conservancy will offer a full moon hike (or snowshoe, if we get some white stuff!) at Hidden Valley Nature Center in Jefferson. Enjoy a crisp evening illuminated by the glow of the moon and discover a new way of being in the woods. At night, sounds become more pronounced; listen for owls and the rustling of nighttime foragers along the trail.
Meet at the gate at HVNC at 4:30 pm. Dress warmly, wear shoes with good grips and a hiking stick if desired, snack, drink and flashlight or headlamp. Your guide will lead the hike to shore of Little Dyer Pond, to watch the moon rise over the water. The hike will be about 40 minutes each way, and of moderate ease. Snowshoes are available by reservation, or bring your own, if we have snow.
Friday, Dec. 21, from 5-6 p.m.
Houghton Graves Park, 1714 Harpswell Islands Rd, Orr’s Island
Celebrate the winter solstice with a lantern walk and bonfire. Welcome the lengthening days with light, song and community. Walk along a short, easy trail lined with lanterns and luminaria. You are encouraged to bring a lantern to carry. At the end of the trail, warm up with songs, fire, hot cocoa and sweet treats.
All are welcome at this free, family-friendly event. Advance registration is requested to help us plan. Click here to register or contact Julia McLeod at firstname.lastname@example.org or 207-837-9613.
Bring warm clothes, a flashlight, your lantern (optional), and a travel mug for your cocoa (to help us use fewer disposable cups). We will provide LED lights to place in your lanterns.
You are welcome to show up at any time during the hour. The lantern walk is self-guided. There will be cocoa, cookies and a campfire for the whole time, and there will be music for at least the first half hour.
Thank you to the Harpswell Community School PTO for co-sponsoring the event and to Lowe’s for donating the fire pits.
