There’s a whole lotta running happening this weekend. Run a half marathon around a mountain or run/walk a 5K on Old Orchard Beach. You can also do bootcamp at Fort Williams Park and go on a bike ride that ends with a hot dog.

Doc & Mardie 5k and Youth 1 Mile Fun Run

The Doc & Mardie 5k and Kids 1 Mile Fun Run is an all-ages run/walk in honor of Doc & Mardie Brown, two people whose zest for life impressed and inspired those who knew them (Mardie completed a triathlon at age 80 and Doc worked out at Champions Fitness Club into his 99th year. Wow). In the spirit of Doc and Mardie, there are awards for the oldest male and female finishers.

Ken’s Hot Dog Ride

A bike ride that ends with hot dogs! Join the Kennebec Valley Bicycle Club for a ride through Mount Vernon, Fayette, Chesterville and Farmington Falls. Choose 14 miles or 30 miles of this moderately hilly course (just chant “hot dog hot dog hot dog” to inspire you up those hills). Afterward, hang out at ride leader Jim Merrick’s house for a BBQ. Ride is free, but an RSVP to Jim (hjmerrick@gmail.com, 293-3784) if you plan on attending the BBQ is appreciated!

The Big Run Around the Mountain Half Marathon
7:30 a.m. Sunday, August 12. Bigrock Mountain, Mars Hill. $25. www.facebook.com/aroostookmedicalcenter
Run around Mars Hill Mountain! The 13.1-mile race begins and ends at Bigrock Mountain Ski Area. Along the way you’ll pass windmills and sprint on paved and dirt roads. Race entry includes t-shirt and finisher medal.

Breaker to Breaker 5K Beach Run/Walk

Partners for World Health hosts this 2nd Annual Breaker to Breaker beach race. The 5K run/walk will take place on the beautiful Old Orchard Beach at low tide, between the Old Orchard Beach Pier and goose Fare Brook. All runners get two free Shipyard beers after the race and the first 100 to register get a free t-shirt. There are some great prizes for top finishers, too, including Uganda baskets.

Barre & Bootcamp

Impress Portland Head Light with your feats of strength. Instructor Hannah is leading workouts at Fort Williams every other Sunday through September. The one-hour outdoor class combines interval training with barre exercises to warm up and cool down. Expect bodyweight exercises and some weights/resistance bands and running. All levels welcome.
